Add the next-event display

1. Open Dot Preferences and go to the menu bar display controls.
2. Add the Next event token in the format builder, or choose a next-event display preset.
3. Enable the countdown if you want the time remaining beside the title.
4. Preview the result and remove any tokens that make the menu bar too wide.

Choose a countdown you can read

A compact format such as “2h” is easy to scan. More detailed formats show hours and minutes, or a clock-style countdown. Choose the precision that helps you prepare rather than watching every second.

You can also choose how close to an event its details should appear. A lead-time setting is useful if you prefer a date or clock in the menu bar until a meeting approaches.

Exclude calendars that are not useful here

A shared team calendar may be worth keeping in the agenda without having its events take over your next-event display. Use the next-event calendar exclusions separately from your agenda selections and meeting-reminder exclusions.

Give long meeting titles room to shorten. Menu bar space depends on your Mac’s display, notch and other menu bar apps. If Dot disappears behind other items, try a shorter format and check any menu bar organizer you use.

Countdowns and alerts solve different problems

The countdown is there when you look up. A floating or fullscreen reminder draws your attention when a meeting approaches. You can use both, but configure each deliberately rather than assuming one enables the other.

If the wrong event appears

Check the event time, the calendars selected for the next-event display, and whether another event takes precedence. Confirm the event exists in Apple Calendar. Changing agenda filters is not always the same as changing next-event filters.
